If yes, the Contra Costa School of Performing Arts might be the right place for you!

The Contra Costa School of Performing Arts (SPA) is a new 6th-12th grade school located in Walnut Creek, California. Our students come from a variety of middle/high schools, including public, private, parochial, charter and home schools. SPA’s mission is to provide a distinguished, pre-professional experience in performing arts within a college and career preparatory setting. We believe in fostering a culture of excellence with the core values of rigor, relevance, resilience, and relationships.

Some key aspects of SPA’s design are:

  • Personalized Learning – SPA will be tailoring pedagogy, curriculum and learning environments by learners or for learners in order to meet their different learning needs and aspirations. Technology and dedicated time in the bell schedule will used to facilitate personalized learning environments.
  • Project Based Learning – SPA believes in a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. There will be dedicated time in the bell schedule to accommodate ongoing projects.
  • Arts Integrated Instruction – SPA believes that students benefit directly from arts integrated programs due to the intrinsic demands of integrated coursework. When integration is intentional, students must use creativity, problem solving, and collaboration to be effective in their work. Integrated work is rigorous, demanding that a student be able to comprehend multiple ideas and concepts in the creation of a summative outcome. SPA will blend an engaging and challenging academic program founded in UC “a-g” coursework and aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) with a rich and nurturing performance arts program offering training in four artistic conservatories (Theater, Dance, Music, Production & Design).
  • School Culture – SPA’s emphasis on the value of building relationships with students trumps all other pedagogical strategies. We believe in extended relationships beyond the classroom, eventually resulting in the creation of a community school, which has a culture of spirit, safety, and inclusion.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Design and teach a full academic schedule
  • Build relationships with all stakeholders: students, parents, staff
  • Collaborate with academic and artistic colleagues in creating arts integrated instruction and grade level integrated projects
  • Attend, participate in, and facilitate team meetings and professional development opportunities, as well as common planning times
  • Communicate regularly with parents about both positive and negative interactions with students
  • Maintain duties as a personalized learning facilitator and academic advisor
  • Other duties, as assigned by the Executive Director

Job Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in subject area to be taught
  • Track-record of high achievement in the classroom and commitment to accountability
  • Alignment with SPA’s core beliefs and educational philosophy
  • Valid California Teaching Credential (or intern eligibile)
  • Multiple authorizations/credentials/certificates highly desirable
