Job Description:

Teacher - Special Day Class: Moderate/Severe
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Provides a functional educational program for students needing a sheltered environment for more than 1/2 a school day, encompassing basic learning skills, basic subject skills, social competencies, and emotional security and independence.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Teaches special day studnets in a sheltered setting with empasis on basic academic subjects, with attention to the student's social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs.
2.  Provides ongoing program of instruction in those skills necessary for successful employment.
3.  Directs and evaluates special day students in work experience and vocational education programs in cooperation with other staff members.
4.  Develops individualized and small group counseling on educational and personal problems which relate to the student's total growth and development.
5.  Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members on each student's progress.
6.  Assists other professional staff members in the diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of student progress.
7.  Provides appropriate physical and psychological environment to establish and reinforce acceptable student behavior, attitudes and social skills and self-image.
8.  Arranges with staff for integration of students into regular classes for instruction in areas where students can meet success.
9.  Serves as a member of the committee for admission, placement, and evaluation of students in special day classes.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Helps parents to understand the problem of learning handicapped students and to gain an acceptance of this fact.
2.  Provides continual supervision on an "on call" basis for students assigned to his/her grou[ as problem situations arise elsewhere in the school.
3.  Performs all other functions performed by regular classroom teacher.
 

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Credential:  Must hold or qualify for the appropriate California Teaching Credential.
2.  Eductation:  Bacholor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. 

SUPERVISOR:

Under the immediate supervision of the site level administrator.
